Ruth Carlyle, Strategic Lead NHS library and knowledge services – East of England and Midlands, worked with the Universities of Newcastle and Southampton on the data analysis.
The data can be accessed via a simple tool, which allows users to search for both health literacy alone and health literacy and numeracy combined, at a local authority level.
Once selected, a local area can be compared to the mean national prevalence.
It is hoped the tool can be used across the country to deliver health literacy training and gain a greater understanding of local challenges.
