A new Major Conditions Strategy has been announced by the Government.

The new strategy was revealed in a ministerial statement made on Tuesday by Steve Barclay, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care.

It will cover several major conditions including:

  • Cancers
  • Cardiovascular diseases, including stroke and diabetes
  • Chronic respiratory diseases
  • Dementia
  • Mental ill health
  • Musculoskeletal disorders

In his statement, Mr Barclay said the new strategy would shift policy towards 'integrated, whole-person care'.

Responding to the strategy

PIF member National Voices has published an initial response to the strategy saying it received the news with mixed feelings.

While welcoming a focus on person-centred care, the statement questioned whether the strategy would replace several specific pieces of work expected in areas including cancer, mental health, dementia and health disparities.

"There will be real concern about whether the new overarching strategy will grasp and respond in sufficient detail to the issues," said the statement.
