Several PIF members have been recognised at the HSJ Awards 2020 during a virtual celebration of healthcare.

The annual event celebrates healthcare providers driving innovation and improving patient outcomes.

PIF members Sherwood Forest Hospitals Foundation Trust, University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust and Mesothelioma UK were all winners in their respective categories.

HSJ editor Alastair McLellan said: "The high quality of entrants in 2020 posed a real challenge to our expert judging panel, who were impressed by the breadth of applications demonstrating real evidence of improvements to patient care.

"We know our finalists are not alone in fostering a culture of excellence and hope that they continue to be a source of inspiration for like-minded teams across the country."

HSJ Awards category winners

The following PIF members won their respective categories at the awards.

Sherwood Forest Hospitals Foundation Trust won the Acute or Specialist Trust of the Year.

The judges were unanimous in their decision. They were impressed by the five-year improvement journey to outstanding and the use of patient and staff stories to demonstrate the improvements.

University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust won the Acute Sector Innovation of the Year Award for its UCL-Ventura CPAP device.

In mid-March 2020, non-invasive CPAP (continuous positive airways pressure) devices were in short supply. UCLH clinicians joined forces with UCL and Mercedes Formula-1 engineers to reverse engineer an old CPAP device.

From a standing start, the UCL-Ventura CPAP was constructed, enhanced to reduce oxygen use by 70%, tested and MHRA-approved, with 10,000 devices manufactured and delivered to the NHS by mid-April.

The Guy’s Rapid Diagnostic Clinic at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust won the Integrated Care Partnership of the Year award.

The clinic was designed by primary care, secondary care, SEL cancer alliance, commissioners, NHS London and patients.

The service provides an integrated fast-track diagnostic service for patients with vague symptoms.

Mesothelioma UK won the Military and Civilian Health Partnership award for its Supporting Our Armed Forces campaign.

The project has comprehensively described mesothelioma within the Armed Forces, identified the needs of veterans, raised awareness and developed resources and relationships to improve outcomes.
