Tommy's announces updated pregnancy and post-birth wellbeing plan

PIF member says new plan will help pregnant women and birthing people think about the support they might need.

Pregnancy and baby charity Tommy's has updated its pregnancy and post-birth wellbeing plan. The plan is endorsed by NICE and updated with input from Mind, the Institute of Health Visitors, Netmums and the Centre for Emotional Health. The charity says it is important to look after your mental health during pregnancy and after birth. Getting help early can often stop things getting worse.

The plan is designed to help pregnant women and birthing people to:

  • Make plans to support their mental health and wellbeing during pregnancy and after the birth.
  • Understand how they are feeling and start conversations about difficult feelings and experiences.
  • Build their networks of peer and community support.

The two-page plan has space to record useful contacts and information about the benefits of antenatal classes. The charity urges those using the form to "be kind to yourself" and includes some simple suggestions to support self-care. Common feelings and behaviours are also listed to help normalise the conversation around mental health during and after pregnancy.
