The defining factors for effective neighbourhood health and care

The case for neighbourhood health and care report, from the NHS Confederation, Local Trust and PPL, identifies the factors necessary to achieve effective, community-led health at the neighbourhood level. It says, without a fundamental change in how health and care services in England engage with neighbourhoods and communities, we will not succeed in addressing key healthcare challenges. Other key points include:

  • A neighbourhood health service does not mean shifting a medical model into communities. It requires a new proactive model that works more effectively with communities and wider partners.
  • There is a huge opportunity to harness existing health and care resources to better coordinate across the population. This includes working with communities to give individuals and families a better start in life and helping working-age adults back into sustainable employment.

New edition of story collection focuses on tackling HIV stigma

The ALLIANCE has released a new edition of its Humans of Scotland series. The third volume in the series is a special edition sharing a diverse range of perspectives on HIV, from people across Scotland living with HIV, as well as health professionals. The ALLIANCE worked in partnership with the Peer Support Scotland project at Terrence Higgins Trust. It is hoped the book will help to address misconceptions and fight the discrimination and misunderstanding still faced by those living with HIV.

The recommendations are based on roundtables, interviews, wider engagement and cast study analysis. The report highlights the need for clarity on the definition of equitable population health and a framework of responsibilities. The project was supported by the Health Foundation.

Addressing key questions about about new patient data software

PIF member the Patients Association has published a guide about the data software being used by NHS organisations. Palantir's Foundry software was awarded a contract to support the NHS Federated Data Platform last year. The Patients Association was commissioned by Palantir to understand patients’ questions about the software and to provide answers in plain language. It held two patient focus groups and then worked with Palantir to develop responses to the questions raised.

Patients urged to access their digital medical record

Northern Ireland's health minister Mike Nesbitt is encouraging people to sign up to a patient portal which will give them instant access to information on their healthcare. The My Care portal allows patients and service users to view information on their digital medical record via an app or web browser. It is hoped the portal will help empower patients to take an active role in their healthcare and wellness.

Consultation on plans for phased launch of obesity injection

PIF member NICE is hosting a consultation on proposals to deliver obesity injections to nearly a quarter of a million people. NHS England proposes that patients likely to achieve the greatest clinical benefit from weight loss are prioritised to receive the medication in a variety of new services that will be tested before an expansion of tirzepatide’s availability. A consultation on the plan is open to registered stakeholders and ends on 22 October. Final guidance on tirzepatide and obesity will be published later in the year.
