New cancer videos offer trusted, up-to-date information
Macmillan Cancer Support has released a suite of new information videos. The videos, which are focused on chemotherapy and fatigue, are now live on the website and on YouTube.
The topics were chosen using insight from Macmillan’s SEO team, which highlighted a strong demand for information on chemotherapy and fatigue. The original video on the webpages for these topics had been removed several years ago as it was outdated and no longer reflected the current brand. Macmillan wanted to ensure people could access trusted, up-to-date information in both written and video formats.
Videos co-produced with nurses
The videos were developed in collaboration with Macmillan nurses, who helped shape and review the clinical content, alongside the video production team and with support from social media.
The new look and feel followed the success of its recent Cancer Explained series. Audiences are increasingly engaging with longer videos, particularly when watching on their TV. The more relaxed studio setting also offered a calmer, less clinical approach.
Scripts for the healthcare professionals to use as a guide and health information team members attended the shoot to ensure the language used was jargon-free and used Plain English.
Working with accessibility in mind
Video provides another way for people to access information, whether they prefer watching and listening to content or hearing directly from healthcare professionals and people with lived experience. It can also help make complex information more engaging and easier to understand.
To support its inclusivity initiative, Macmillan produces BSL versions as standard across its cancer information video suite. “By combining PIF-certified written information with accessible video content, we aim to help more people affected by cancer find the information and support they need in the format that works best for them,” says Selina Corkery, Service Manager (Editorial) in Macmillan Cancer Support's cancer information development team.
