The Eve Appeal launches AI tool to combat ChatGPT cancer advice errors
Gynaecological cancer charity The Eve Appeal has launched an AI-powered information tool after identifying potentially dangerous errors in cancer advice provided by ChatGPT.
The charity found ChatGPT failed to identify ovarian cancer as a possible cause of persistent bloating, instead suggesting ways to manage irritable bowel syndrome. It also failed to identify vulval cancer as a potential cause of vulval itching, despite being provided with details of how the symptom can present in cancer.
Trusted information available online
Its new chatbot, Ask Eve Assist, provides cancer information from sources certified with the PIF TICK.
Ask Eve Assist is a new online tool that provides 24/7 access to trusted information about gynae cancers, investigations, symptoms, screening, HPV, prevention and where to find support. It is available on the charity’s website to help users find the information they need.
“Ask Eve Assist is unlike other generic online AI tools,” it states on the website. “It generates its answers to your questions exclusively from our own expert-reviewed, PIF ticked (the gold standard quality mark) health information.
“All our health information goes through rigorous quality assurance and review processes and is developed with qualified healthcare professionals and people affected by cancer. So with Ask Eve Assist, whatever the time of day or night you have somewhere to go with your questions and get answers that you can trust.”
Tool will support Eve Appeal nurses
The charity’s Ask Eve Nurses are helping more people every day with information and support around gynae health and gynae cancers. “With hundreds of thousands of women still on waiting lists for gynaecology appointments, and some people struggling to get a GP appointment, they have been there as a constant source of support,” the charity says.
“As well as coming to our nurses, Helen and Tracie, we know that lots of people are turning to doctor Google, and now also doctor AI, for their health information and reassurance. Whilst having somewhere to go with your questions all hours of the day can be useful, generic AI tools don’t always provide accurate and reliable answers.”
Nurse service still available
Ask Eve Assist has been designed to answer the simpler questions, so that its nurses have more time for people when they need support.
“If you need more specialist support or have a question that Ask Eve Assist can’t answer, it will help you set up a call or email referral with our nurses. You won’t get stuck in a loop, you can ask to be referred to our nurses at any time. If you’ve got a question or worry, click the ‘Ask a Question’ button in the bottom right hand corner of the webpage to chat to Ask Eve Assist.”
