My Stroke Companion evaluation results

Online platform aims to increase understanding of stroke among survivors and caregivers.

An online platform developed by PIF member Cognitant is providing tailored information for stroke survivors and their caregivers.

My Stroke Companion was developed with support from UCLH.

Available on Healthinote, it is now offered to patients discharged from stroke units at five NHS sites.

My Stroke Companion features

My Stroke Companion offers separate versions for stroke survivors and caregivers. It includes:

  • Explainer videos and visual content
  • Easy read downloads
  • Personalised information, including local support groups
  • A holistic information package, covering topics including lifestyle changes
  • Signposts to further high-quality and trusted information, including from PIF member The Stroke Association
  • Translation into Arabic and Polish

Evaluation

Between May and November 2023, 504 information prescriptions were issued to stroke survivors, resulting in 400 unique users accessing the platform.  

Between September and December 2023, an optional anonymous survey was completed by 42 stroke survivors and 26 caregivers. Key findings include:

  • The number of stroke survivors reporting  ‘good’ or ‘excellent’ understanding of stroke increased from 3 in 10 to more than 8 in 10 after accessing the platform
  • The number of caregivers reporting ‘good’ or ‘excellent’ understanding of stroke increased from 3 in 10 to more than 9 in 10
  • More than 9 in 10 stroke survivors and caregivers felt the content was easy to understand
  • Feedback indicated increased knowledge in all domains
  • The most significant increase in knowledge related to finding local support services
