Marie Curie launches videos to help families understand end-of-life symptoms
Marie Curie UK has launched a new series of information videos to help carers, family members and friends better understand some of the symptoms that can happen towards the end of life. The videos, which feature Marie Curie nurses, Michelle and Kate, provide practical accessible information about what people might experience and when to get support. They are now live on the website and YouTube channel. The new videos cover:
- Breathing changes towards the end of life.
- Eating and drinking less towards the end of life.
- Restlessness and agitation towards the end of life.
- Skin changes towards the end of life.
- Recognising and managing pain towards the end of life.
Shaped by lived experience
The topics were informed by consulting with people with lived experience, alongside analysis of website and search data. This highlighted the symptoms people felt least prepared for, and the information they most wanted to access.
People with lived experience were involved throughout the project, providing feedback on the topics, format, script and final videos. Their insight helped shape content that responds to the needs and concerns of families and carers. A key theme from this feedback was the importance of receiving clear, reassuring information during an often uncertain and emotional time.
User research carried out by Marie Curie found that people particularly value hearing information directly from trusted healthcare professionals. In response, the videos combine expert information delivered by Marie Curie Nurses, with animation to help illustrate what people may notice. The videos were developed in collaboration with clinical experts, Marie Curie healthcare professionals and lived experience volunteers to ensure the information is accurate, evidence-based and easy to understand.
Expanding access to end-of-life information
All five videos include British Sign Language (BSL) interpretation, reflecting Marie Curie's commitment to accessibility. The new videos complement Marie Curie's existing range of online information, printed resources and videos about end of life care. They provide another way for people to access trusted support.
Imogen Pinnell, information and support content manager at Marie Curie said: “We often hear from families that they're looking for straightforward answers and reassurance when something changes and they're not sure what's happening. Video can be a really helpful way of getting that information. We hope these films help people feel a little more informed and supported, whether they find them on our website, YouTube or through a search for answers online."
